The Student’s Role
At the elementary level, educational content is a blend of online and offline learning. Some hands-on materials are provided. Students join live online classes and can also work independently to varying degrees. Most elementary students do require support from their Learning Coach for much of the school day. ‡
Students in grades K–2 typically spend 30–40% of their time online, while those in grades 3–5 spend closer to 50–60% of their time on the computer.
The Learning Coach’s Role
As a parent or guardian of an online elementary school student in a K12-powered school, you or another trusted adult of your choosing will play an active role in your child’s education as their Learning Coach. Learning Coaches work alongside your student’s teachers to support your child. Learning Coaches receive school-provided resources, advice, and access to an online Learning Coach community.
Learning Coaches help monitor student attendance and their mastery of online lessons and assessments. On average, Learning Coaches spend 4–6 hours a day providing guidance and oversight. ‡Learn more about the role of the Learning Coach throughout the different stages of your student’s education
